We Are Fiji Video
Great nationalistic music video featuring various singers in Fiji Islands, who have come together to produce this rendition based on Fiji's national anthem. It is reminiscent of Australia's "We are Australian", calling for unity and harmony between the different people who make up Fiji's nation. Fiji has approximately 50% indigenous Fijian, 45% Indian, and other races make up the remainder (European, other Pacific Islanders, Asian). The word for indigenous Fijian is 'kai viti' (kye veeti) (Viti being the Fijian word for Fiji). Foreigners are called 'kai volagi' (kye vo-lahngi). There is also a word for part-Fijian/part-European resulting from cross-marriages since the colonial days. These are called 'kai loma'.
The video clip, which is also reminiscent of the Live Aid concert's 'We are the World', starts with the haunting siren of a Fijian davui conch shell. The clip then continues with the various Fijian singers in studio format, as well as introducing clips of Fiji, waterfalls, beaches and people. One shot shows Fijians atop the Sigatoka sand dunes, a unique natural phenomena on the south-western coastline of Viti Levu. Another shows the Fijian rugby players scoring a try in an international game. It closes with the flag of Fiji - turquoise with the Fiji shield emblems and the Union Jack (from it's Colonial past).
