Music of the Fiji Islands
The music of Fiji combines traditional with modern, love songs with religious songs, historically perpetuating instruments with modern guitar and ukulele. The most enduring musical instrument of all is the human voice and Fijians have excellent singing voices, often accompanied. When visiting Fiji, try to visit a local church on a Sunday morning to hear the depth and beauty of the Fijian voice. It is often the highlight of the stay for many people.
Fiji's music also embraces the different cultural groups of the nation, of course, which include not only indigenous Fijian but also Hindu, European, Asian and other Pacific Islander styles. The indigenous music can be seen at its best at a traditional ' meke ' or Fijian dance and music display. Resorts and hotels often arrange Fijian nights and it gives visitors a chance to see and hear the local villagers perform. Dressed in native costume, adorned with tropical flowers, and their skin glowing with fragrant coconut oil, they play traditional percussion instruments that - combined with rhythmic chanting - guide the meke dancers through their performance.

A video of the band boys at the Nadi International Airport. Travellers alight from their plane journey to be embraced by the warm humid air of the tropics. From the aero bridge, they walk along an open-air walkway and enter the arrivals building. The first thing they hear are the friendly voices of a local band singing Fijian melodies and the 'bula' song. Bula is the word for hello and will be heard throughout your time in the Fiji Islands. The Nadi Airport band boys give a taste of the sights and sounds of Fiji.
